Remote Learning for Non-English Students: A Challenge or Innovation?

Abstract


The Covid-19 pandemic has made a great change in English learning that requires a practical stage after given a theory. The challenge faced in English learning is how learners and teachers adapt to remote learning system. This study identified and analyzed the challenges in English learning faced by students in non-English department. This study involved students in five study programs, namely Islamic Education (PAI), Management of Islamic Education (MPI), Akhwalusy Syakhshiyah (AS), Primary School Teacher Education (PGMI), and Islamic Banking (PS). This study applied qualitative method with phenomenological approach. The data were obtained from questionnaire distributed online (Google Form) to all students in these departments. The questionnaire consisted of some questions related to some problems faced by those students during English learning with an online system, materials that students did not understand, and students' expectations for English language learning. Data analysis was conducted by involving some studies and theories relevant to previous formulated materials in the questionnaire. This study was expected to be a consideration in the development of methods and strategies in English language learning for non-English students in a higher education. This study resulted that the dominant problems faced by respondents were online learning system (54.8%), and applications used as learning media (29%). Other problems included a limited internet network access, difficulty in understanding English courses, lack of detailed material exposure, and laziness. Thus, the use of learning applications that consumed a lot of internet quota was not recommended in the learning situation and context in this study.
