The Effectiveness of the Stars’ Knight Game in Improving Speaking Skill of Students in SMKN 3 Makassar

Abstract


An English teacher must have a good technique to make the students interest to learn speaking skill. One of the methods that makes the students appreciate the lesson is through game. Teachers can predict how far the students acquired the language through the game process. This research aims to know whether the Stars’ Knight Game is effective in improving student’s speaking skill of the second grade in SMKN 3 Makassar. This research uses pre-experimental method with one group pre-test and post-test design. It takes XI TKRO class as the sample of the research which consists of 20 students that are selected using purposive sampling technique. The data are collected by using Stars’ Knights Game teaching method which is taken based on four meetings. Each of them takes 90 minutes. The data are analyzed using SPSS 22 version to measure the students’ mean scores and t test between pre-test and post-test. The results show that the students’ post-test value is higher than the pre-test. They show improvement of mean scores in accuracy (0.05), fluency (0.30) and comprehensibility (1.40). Moreover, the result of t test (p value 0.000 < 0.05) shows that there is a significance difference between pre-test and post-test of students’ speaking skill. It can be concluded that Star Knight Game is applicable for improving English speaking skill if senior high school students.
