Incorporating HOTS to Enhance Students’ Writing Performance

Abstract


Writing for most of the people is undeniably the hardest skill in English language as it really requires the higher-order of thinking skill in order to create an effective and systematic composition. Higher-order thinking skill in writing can be carried out by the use of ICT at any time specifically during an online learning where the teaching and learning processes are conducted virtually. This article is aimed to examine the correlation between higher-order thinking skills in writing and ICT. ICT can be used as the media to develop students’ writing skills in which HOTS take a pivotal role. Besides, this article also wants to explore what HOTS is, why HOTS can improve the students’ writing skills, and how to apply HOTS to develop the students’ writing. For the next discussion, several previous relevant researches are highlighted in the matter of the advantages of HOTS in English writing skills. Further, this article finally presents the conclusion and pedagogical implication of HOTS in the English language teaching and in English as a foreign language.
