Use of foreign languages in restaurant boards in surabaya: a culinary linguistics approach

Abstract


In the city of Surabaya, you can often find restaurants that use foreign language names. The purpose of this study is to examine the form and function of foreign languages ​​in the name of this restaurant. By considering the meaning of which foreign language in the context of restaurant naming can be studied through a culinary linguistic approach. The focus of the research is (1) word formation and the process of using foreign languages ​​in restaurant signboards in Surabaya, (2) the meaning of signs in restaurant signboards in Surabaya, and (3) the function of foreign languages ​​in restaurant signage in Surabaya. The ethnographic method is used to read the language and culture related to culinary based on the understanding of the Surabaya people. This research was conducted in East Java Province, namely in the city of Surabaya. Data collection uses the documentation method. The results of the analysis show that the restaurant signboards in the city of Surabaya use English, Korean, Japanese, Mandarin, and Arabic.
