Abstract
The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has changed the landscape of tertiary education, as educational institutions across the world changed to implement hybrid learning initiatives to ascertain continuity, while managing the transmission of this contagious disease. All Indonesian colleges have continued to deliver courses via digital platforms. This exploratory study analyzed the benefits and drawbacks of employing a hybrid learning design on Madura university (UNIRA) students, East Java, Indonesia. In order to find out the opinions of UNIRA students regarding benefits and drawbacks of hybrid learning design, and to assess the level of their adaptation to the remote learning system, accordingly a sociological survey was carried out among 30 UNIRA students in the 2020/2021 academic year. The results of the survey suggested that the majority of UNIRA students deemed remote learning by and large including the hybrid design completely unacceptable for education in UNIRA. Most of them would rather return the in-person education system than online education system. All at once, the students stated their satisfaction about the teachers’ work as well as assess the quality of command obtained during learning in a hybrid design. Undeniably, the use of remote learning elements can vary the learning process of UNIRA students, but individual communication and direct interaction with teachers and classmates, individual and team work in the classroom, immersion in the language setting become very significant for UNIRA students
