Exploring the Benefits and Challenges of Digital Storytelling in American Math Classroom for Immigrant Students
Last modified: 2022-07-22
Abstract
Immigrant students who recently migrated to the United States (the US) experience challenges to adapt with a new culture and a new language, particularly in the transition to the American mathematics classrooms. This study explores the benefits and challenges of implementing digital mathematics classroom, especially for immigrant students. The result of the literature review shows that digital storytelling provides possible benefits such as connecting mathematics with real-life situations so that students understand concepts better. Digital storytelling also has several challenges, such as students' difficulties in connecting abstract mathematical concepts with math in everyday life situations. With very few research related to digital mathematics storytelling, research about this issue needs to be conducted further, especially with participants from immigrant students so that they have the same opportunity to understand math concepts as students who were born and raised in the US even though the immigrant students are adapting to a new culture and a new language.
