Last modified: 2022-07-25
Abstract
This study was designed to analyze the functions of discourse markers in motivational speeches delivered by Elizabeth Gilbert and Ken Robinson in TED Talk. Furthermore, the aim of this research is to investigate the functions of discourse markers found in both speeches. Applying the qualitative method, this research analyzes and describes discourse markers used in both speeches. The result shows that each speaker employs many discourse markers in delivering their speeches with various functions on textual domains and each marker can have more than one function depending on the context of the utterances. It is found that discourse markers promote functions, those are opening frame marker, fillers, topic switcher, information indicator, sequence/relevance marker, Repair marker. Furthermore,it reveals that discourse markers may contribute greatly to the coherent and pragmatic flow of the discourse and also help the speakers to organize and construct their ideas using the appropriate discourse markers.
