Abstract


This study investigates how the English Department students choose the equivalence of ecocultural terms that are related to Balinese natural landscapes including customary forest and irrigation system as well as the cultural content in their report text.  Specifically, the present research attempts to reveal  how the ecocultural terms in Balinese language are presented in English writing. The investigation was undertaken in one private university in Bali involving a qualitative study as the research design with the total of sixteen selected participants to be the object of research.  The methods include the step of collecting data ranging from observing how the students gather their knowledge on the ecocultural phenomena through a field study  to a close reading on their report texts after joining outdoor class activity. The analysis results in two major findings, namely (i) the application of translation strategies like the use of loanword or the loanword plus explanation that is predominantly apply in their writing and (ii) the loadword is expected to be understood by the discourse in writing that is the context of situation  when the terms are utilized to report various ecocultural activities in the site research, namely the customary forest and hill, the religious and temple ceremonies, and the subak irrigation system. Through this study, it is expected that the English department students are aware of their local and cultural values and are able to inform their existence by means of showing their ability in report writing.
