Abstract

This study aims to locate the hybridity and ambivalence of identity construction in Urban Native Americans in There There novel by Tommy Orange. The identity revelation is meant especially for Native American communities as the main characters in the novel. Some characters meet conflict when living in the majority culture with White people and other ethnicities. This study employed Homi K. Bhabha’s theories in revealing the problems of identity construction experienced by Urban Native Americans. In addition, this study used a descriptive qualitative research method. There There novel by Tommy Orange was an object material in this research. The data were narration and dialogue from the novel. The writer went through several processes, such as data collection to data evaluation, to ensure the research is carried out correctly. As a result of this research, the writer successfully revealed the identity construction issue experienced by the five main characters in the novel There There such as Orvil Red Feather, Tony Loneman, Edwin Black, Calvin Johnson, and Blue. They faced conflict in his identity and showed hybridity, mimicry, and ambivalence identity to resist the condition. In conclusion as Urban Native Americans, those five characters keep struggling to have their position in the society among White people in the U.S.
