Abstract
The emergence of google translate makes easier for the translation process especially for English students who always use English both as the language of instruction and lecture activities. However, unfortunately this convenience allows them to question their language skills or linguistic competence. This phenomenon was demonstrated by previous research towards ELESP students’ attitudes on google translate. This research aims to investigate students' linguistic competence and performance in translation. This investigation began based on the problem of students' attachment using google translate which vague their linguistic competence even though they were ELESP students. In need of analysis, the researcher used a quantitative approach and interpreted the scores result by number and explanation. The participants were 53 students of ELESP students that have taken translation courses. The instrument used to collect the data is a test divided into a linguistic competence test and a translation task. Therefore, this research showed the result of students' linguistic competence and performance in translation and determined how much their linguistic competence and performance significantly influence their translation. The findings show that 39.7% were classified as Good, 49% Fairly Good, 7.6% Fair and 3.8% Poor on the linguistic competence test. Meanwhile, in the translation task (51%) it is classified as Excellent, (35.8%) good, (13.2%) poor. In addition, it is also found that there is an effect of LC's relationship on translation. This means that if LC goes up, translation ability also goes up. Besides, if LC is decreased there will also be a decrease in translation ability.
