Abstract
Unlike characters, the settings in a novel are less discussed. Nevertheless, novels often contain detailed literary representations of cities. They depict the places in the city, and narrate the uniqueness of the city life. This article discusses the representation of the city of Paris in Anna and the French Kiss. This novel is a young adult novel that is intended for young people with a young protagonist and has themes of friendship, first love, relationships, and identity. It is an easy to read novel, yet it represents rich data of the places in Paris, and the city life. This article uses the qualitative close reading to analyze. To support the analysis, the images of the real places in Paris are added in the discussion. Aspects of the city analyzed are factual and fictional sites and locations, signature buildings or landmarks, concrete places and streets. The analysis includes the functions of the places and their descriptions have for the plot like its function as the direction-marker for movement, as background ‘pictures’ for the setting, and as place of action.
