Abstract

The world is now facing COVID 19 pandemic. This changes people’s way of living, working from home due to quarantine is a case in point. Being in a quarantine for quite a long time thus causes people to be more creative. They make a serious thing become a funny one, for example by creating humorous memes on the internet to lessen the feelings of fear or stress. This research is aimed at examining the implicature of internet memes related to the COVID 19 pandemic. It focuses on describing the meaning implied in the memes based on the context and to investigate the purposes of the memes. The study is based on Grice’s theory on implicature (1975). Implicature refers to the act of meaning or implying one thing by saying something else. The study used qualitative descriptive method to describe the implicature in the memes. The data used in this research were taken from 10 internet memes. The result of the analysis reveals that the memes mostly imply the impacts of the pandemic in people’s lives. The memes also serve communication goals. These memes are used to satirize, to entertain, and to tell the readers to follow COVID 19 prevention protocols.
