Virtual Literature Circle: Innovative Strategy to Teach Reading in Higher Education

Abstract


The Covid-19 outbreak has now changed face-to-face teaching method in classroom to virtual one. Lecturers as educators must innovate in applying teaching methods so that the delivery of material can be conveyed properly to the students with appropriate method. This study focuses on the implementation of distance learning method in higher education level, especially in reading subject by using the Virtual Literature Circle strategy. The implementation of this strategy was carried out for twelve meetings using online learning media, such as Google Classroom, Zoom and Whatsapp Group. Data collection techniques used were test and observation. The test given was a reading test in the form of multiple choice which consists of fifty questions. Apart from all the obstacles faced in its implementation, the learning process could still run optimally in order to be able to apply innovative learning method by utilizing existing technology. The results showed that Virtual Literature Circle strategy can increase reading interest as well as reading literacy of students in reading subject. In addition, the online implementation of Virtual Literature Circle strategy, which is adapted from the traditional Literature Circle application but by utilizing and integrating with their gadgets, can increase the involvement of each student in the learning process. It also improves their ability to use gadgets creatively and innovatively in finishing their task for each role in literature circle.
