Taking the place of her ailing father to serve the Imperial Army over the decree of one man per family, she breaks out the defined gender role to pursue the honor of her family. Unlike other films setting out damsel-in-distress saved by a prince, Mulan is vividly depicted as an independent, rebellious, and ambitious woman. On the basis of this vignette, this research is aimed at studying the gender role of the character Mulan through her speech. Barber’s (2015) assertion on Disney’s female gender roles is the exact counterpart of Austin’s (1962) Speech Act Theory and Searle’s (1969) classifications of illocutionary acts to pertinently uncover the depiction of her given characterization. They bring the forces of meaning in the intertwined sentences voicing by Mulan. As the contextual conditions being met, Mulan’s utterances are finally being the representation of her gender role in the movie. Keywords: gender, family honor, Mulan movie
