Using Instagram to Develop Productive Active Language Skills

Abstract


The digital era provides opportunities as well as challenges for all parties to continue to develop. One of the signs of this abundance of digital resources is the emergence of social media applications such as Instagram. The presence of an Instagram is not only for entertainment and business purposes but also very useful in learning activities. Its interesting features are very suitable for the development of language learning. Mastery of language skills both oral and written is an important asset to face global competition. One form of language skills that is important to master is active productive language skills. These skills consist of speaking and writing skills. This article aims to describe the use of Instagram social media in developing productive active language skills combined with learning models. Data collection techniques in this study used observation, questionnaires, and document analysis techniques. Data analysis was performed using interactive techniques consisting of data reduction, data presentation, and concluding. The results of the analysis show that: 1) the form of writing skills that can be done is to upload the results of free writing accompanied by personal photos according to the topics developed. The result of free writing shows that the average students' writing skills are at a moderate level. 2) the form of speaking skills is done by asking students to convey what they wrote. If done continuously, it can be developed to train their mental, vocabulary, and speaking skills. Based on these findings, Instagram is very appropriate to be used as a medium for developing productive active language skills.
