Developing Online Courses for English Department Students: the case study of Listening courses and Introduction to Indonesian Folklore course

Abstract


This paper discusses the practices of developing online courses for English Department students and the evaluation from teachers and students on the online courses. Online courses are inevitable in the time of Covid-19 pandemic. The method that was once approached with cautions becomes fully run, without adequate preparation for most teachers.  English Department in Soegijapranata Catholic University is no exception. It must do online courses both for English skill courses and the content courses.  This article aims to share the practices of developing online courses for English Department students. For this article, the writer focuses on the development of online Listening courses and Introduction to Indonesian Folklore course. Those courses are the online courses the writer helps to develop, as Listening courses coordinator and as one of the online course developers for Introduction to Indonesian Folklore. This paper also presents the evaluation from the teachers and the students on the online courses. The evaluations were done by doing Focus Group Discussion for both teachers and students and distributing questionnaires to the students. In this paper, the writer wants to argue that the features offered by Learning Management System such as Quiz, Forum, and Assignment, as well as Web/video conferences should be used complementary to each other to achieve the best result for the students. Additionally, the text-to-speech program and YouTube should also be used to provide audio and video materials for teaching English skills as well as the content courses.
