Abstract
This study aims to describe the difficulties faced by students in learning English and the factors causing it. The research method used is the qualitative method. The participants included in this study were junior high school students from various provinces in Indonesia such as Java, Sulawesi and Sumatra. They were in the 7th, 8th, and 9th grades. Data collection techniques used were semi-structured online interview via WhatsApp and online questionnaire through a google form. The results showed that the students have difficulties in comprehending the materials through online learning due to some factors such as differences in English prior knowledge, limited vocabulary mastery for all level of students, boring atmosphere, and lacking interaction. To conclude, the results obtained explains that online learning is less effective in junior high school. The explications could be uttered from this study is that the teachers should prepare more fun and active interaction during English learning, for example providing them with English games, the students also should learn English more through the online platform such YouTube and other great applications, they also should listen and watch to English songs and movies for adding their English vocabulary mastery.
