Abstract
Queer subject positions’ representation in mass media is not a new phenomenon in Indonesia. Such names waria, gay, lesbi and transgender characters are often negatively depicted (Dechene, 2016). Furthermore, most Indonesians deemed heterosexuality as the normal sexual orientation, therefore they often perceive gender and sexuality in a binary way (male and female, masculine and feminine) without looking at other genders and sexuality. Homosexuality, in Indonesia, is considered as a set of abnormal acts and contrary to their religions and they are denied access to power and have almost no access to pursue their rights. In this matter, what are depicted in mass media both visually and linguistically hold crucial role in shaping people’s perspective and understanding. It’s due to the fact that a state of national identity is constructed on the basis of mutually unifying thoughts and beliefs through the processes of social imagination and representation. This research aims at revealing the linguistics representation in Indonesia mass media. Several established media in Indonesia are taken as the data source. This research is entirely conducted with triangulation methods. Critical discourse analysis and corpus linguistics are carried out as the approaches to the study. Thus, in this paper, news corpus data are collected and the quantitatively counted and qualitatively analysed.
