ONOMASIOLOGICAL ANALYSIS OF 21ST CENTURY WESTERN FOODS IN INDONESIA

Abstract


This research attempts to explore names of western foods, which are available in the menu of modern restaurants. These names are created uniquely to attract attention and in this case the creation is by combining or shortening words. It moreover refers to the ingredients of a particular food. Thus, this research is aimed at analyzing and configuring the formation of the names of food as written in the menu of western food in Indonesia. Applying onomasiological analysis study, this research is projected on delineating the types of word formation process and the semantic level. To explore, analyze and describe, this research applies qualitative method and employs data taken from three websites; those are wendys.com, american-grille.com, and carl’sjr.com. The data collected are in the form of words. This research reveals that the menu are intentionally made to create a unique name to attract people to buy the products. In this case, this research found six types of word formation process; they are derivation, clipping, blending, compound, abbreviation, and acronym.
