The Functions of Nias Personal Pronouns

Abstract
Nias language has four types of personal pronouns. As research works on its personal pronouns are limited, this article aims to pose how those pronouns function in the language. The data for this research were taken from Nias short stories that contain various uses of the personal pronouns of the languages. It was qualitatively conducted to reach the objective described above. The data were processed by a descriptive-analytical method where available facts and information were carefully analyzed to make critical evaluation. The results show that pronominal prefixes are used as subjects in transitive sentences. Pronominal suffixes and mutated personal pronouns are used as subjects in intransitive sentences and those with copular verbs and as objects in simple independent clauses. Unmutated personal pronouns are used as subjects in relative clauses and cleft sentences and as objects in relative clauses.
