Abstract

Abstract

Racism is an endless issue especially in America. The problems dealing with racism have been documented in some movies, including in movie Blackkklansman. Accordingly, this research has three objectives: (1) to find out the kinds of racism done by Ku Klux Klan, (2)  to find out the kinds of hatred displayed by Ku Klux Klan, and (3) to find out how Ku Klux Klan spread racism and hatred. In this descriptive qualitative research, the researchers used the theory on kinds of racism by Henry and Tator (2006), theory on kind of hatreds by Opotow and McClelland (2007), and theory on racism and hatred spread by Fredrickson (2015). The results show that there are three kinds of racism (institutional, internalized, and interpersonal) and three kinds of hatred (negation of intimacy: disgust, passion in hate: anger-fear, and decision commitment in hate: devaluation-diminution through contempt) that appeared in the movie. In addition to that, it was found out that Ku Klux Klan spread racism and hatred through three methods: colonial ideology doctrine hereditary, religion justification, and racial group. Overall, from this movie it can be concluded that racism comes with hatred, but hatred is not always part of racism. To consider people racists or haters, we need to see from how they judge and treat others.
