Abstract

Learning to speak in English is one of the problems experienced by students in learning a second language. Especially in a Covid-19 pandemic situation, where students are required to do online learning and teaching activities. The background of the researcher is to find out the problems faced by students in learning to speak English through online learning. This study aims to find out what are the problems faced by ELESP Batch 2020 students when learning to speak English through online learning. The method used in this research is descriptive qualitative research. The subjects in this study were students from the English Language Education Study Program Batch 2020, and the sample in this study amounted to 20 people. This research was conducted 2 times from each class. The instruments used in this research are observations, questionnaires, and interviews. There are 25 questions in the questionnaire. While in the interview, the questions given were 10 questions. Based on the results of the questionnaire data, each student has different problems. Of all the problems, they have problems with the lack of knowledge in vocabulary. There are 58.7% of students who agree that lack of knowledge in vocabulary is a problem they often face in learning to speak. In addition, another problem that they often face in learning to speak is that they find it difficult if the other person or the interlocutor does not understand what they are talking about. Here it can be seen that 54.7% of students agree with this statement. Based on the research results, it can be seen that students think that learning to speak English is an easy thing to learn, and they also have an interest in learning to speak English. Although learning to speak is considered easy, every student certainly has problems in learning it.
