This study intended to analyze defense mechanism in John Green's The Fault in Our Stars. Qualitative research design applied and it is descriptively analyzed. The data collected is in the form of words rather than numbers. There are two kinds of sources, primary and secondary. Primary source is the novel and secondary sources are books, articles, internet sources and other relevant source.In analyzing the data the psychoananalys from Sigmud Freud was applied to dig out deeply defense mechanism.

Research finding shows that there are some of evidences found in the novel. Hazel is a main character who reflected defense mechanism. The forms of defense mechanism found in the novel are : Selective Perception, Denial,  Avoidance,  Displacement, Fixation, Identification, and Rationalization
