Abstract
Despite its importance, it must be admitted that teaching literature, especially in EFL context still becomes a challenging thing to do. One of many reasons why teaching literature is very effortful is because there are students who possess negative attitude towards literature study. Numerous students still think that literature is boring and lack of fun (Alfauzan & Hussain, 2016; Al-Mahrooqi & Al-Wahaibi, 2012; Shakfa, 2012; Kabilan & Kamaruddin, 2010) which leads to lack of interest and motivation in class (Hussein & Al-Emami, 2018; Işıklı; & Ö.Tarakçıoğlu, 2017; Shakfa, 2012; Blanco, 2004). Studies show that there is a chance the problem lays not with the students but with the professors themselves. Furthermore, lecturers nowadays must aware that the students belong to Generation Z era (Filipovic, 2020; Shatto & Erwin, 2017) who are looking for authentic and meaningful relationships, opportunities to connect through a variety of in‐person and online platforms along with value and return on investment (Barber, 2020). Consequently, teachers must creatively find new approach in teaching literature. On the whole, a considerable amount of research had successfully spotlighted the positive result of the implementation of podcast in teaching English in EFL context (Rinda, 2020; Tabatabaee & Rezvani, 2019; Yoestara & Putri, 2019; Dmytriieva, 2018). However, none of the study above showed depiction of students’ thoughts as they use podcast in learning literature. The previous research of podcast mainly focused on listening and speaking skill. Thus, this research attempts to see students’ perception toward the use podcast in learning literature. The data of this research was taken from written questionnaire and interview which represented the 45 participants’ perspective. Results showed that students have a positive recognition towards the utilization of web podcasts in learning literature; over 80% of the participants stated that the podcast increases motivation in learning literature. In addition, the participants explained that trivia and issues discussed in the podcast evoke their curiosity which make them interested to follow up the information by themselves. Lastly, the study showed that the podcast helps more than 90% of the participants to see that literature subject is interesting as they are intrigued to explore professions related with literature study. In other word, the podcast helps them to grasp how the materials they learn in class is related with the experiences from the guest speakers. However, it must be understood that applying podcast also has its downsides, that is: using podcast is very challenging for students with low competence as the podcast is delivered mainly in English. Thus, using podcast in literature study is more effective when it is used for intermediate or advance level.
