THE INDONESIAN GOVERNMENT'S REPRESENTATION IN LOCAL LANGUAGE ISSUE IN THE JAKARTA POST

Abstract


The objective of this study is to reveal on how government is represented in the news reporting local language issue published by the Jakarta Post. This qualitative study employ Fairclough Three-Dimentional framework which comprises Text, Discursive Practice, and Social Practice. The data were collected from 52 selected news articles published by the Official Website of the Jakarta Post. The findings of this current study showed that The Jakarta Post was on the government side and it positively represented the government. In textual analysis, it showed that The Jakarta Post Emphasized the Government as the one who has a pivotal role to preserve language. Meanwhile, in discourse practice, The Jakarta Post do not tended to defend its point of view through indirect sentences that were used the most as compared to the others to present the news in a way that did not represent the truth. Moreover, in socio-cultural practice, it was revealed that the problem happened due to lack of action taken by the government.
